And with that in mind, let me draw the photo of what I see being available in the next 12 months 1. 5G Gadgets Our brand-new 5G (fifth-generation) wireless networks are a subject I have actually been covering for years now.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic interfered with supply chains last year, an outstanding 250 million 5G-enabled gadgets were still offered. Specifically in the 2nd quarter, there were supply chain interruptions, manufacturing hold-ups, and work interruptions. And all of this eventually resulted in Apple delaying the release of the 5G-enabled i, Phone 12 by 2 months.
When you think about all of that, offering 250 million units is amazing. More notably, the delays triggered by the pandemic produced a lots of bottled-up need. Which demand is now going to be pressed into 2021. In truth, I predict that more than 500 million 5G gadgets will be delivered in 2021.
Phase Three of 5G When I've discussed 5G in the past, I've explained its 3 different stages. In Stage One, the facilities of these brand-new networks is developed out, including all the brand-new towers and fiber-optic circuitry that 5G will require. In Phase Two, 5G devices go on sale.
And in Phase 3, 5G services start to be provided. That's when we begin to see applications operating on 5G networks. Think about things like massive multiplayer games over a mobile phone. That's not possible with 4G. It will be with 5G. And my 2nd 5G prediction for 2021 is that we will start Phase 3 by this summer.
More and more customers will go out to buy a 5G phone to gain access to these applications. 5G is going to open up a suite of amazing applications: self-driving cars, the Internet of Things, robotic surgical treatment, and more.
The investment opportunities going forward will be massive. CRISPR Genetic Modifying Stepping away from 5G, the next essential technology I foresee in 2021 is CRISPR genetic modifying. It's one of the most interesting developments in biotechnology.
